MMA 101: The Sweep

Saturday, July 25, 2009
We're heading back to the Jiu-Jitsu world for this edition of MMA 101, featuring the grappling-reversal technique, the guard sweep.

While "sweeping" may also refer to the standing techniques of taking an opponent to the ground (including trips and hook kicks), the more common usage of the term in MMA refers to the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu form of the sweep, reversing positions with an opponent while grappling on the ground. Sweeping in BJJ is used to achieve top position after being taken down or pulling guard.
