MMA 101: The Sprawl
We're getting defensive in our latest edition of MMA 101, this time featuring the counter-wrestling technique, the sprawl.
The sprawl is a technique derived primarily from Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling, and is also seen in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and other forms of submission grappling. The goal of the sprawl is to stuff and avoid takedown attempts from your opponent by changing position and shifting your weight onto him.

Minowaman- Legacy of a Can Warrior
He is a punchline. He's MMA trivia. He is an internet meme, and an underdog's hero. He's a "can" and a "card-filler", and he is commonly the "David" fighting "Goliath" in Japanese freakshow match ups.
He's Ikuhisa "The Punk" Minowa.
Most would render his place in the history of MMA an insignificant footnote. A chuckle-worthy aside to the many-paged tales of champions and legends that populate the bulk of MMA's greater sporting legacy. But for those few MMA aficionados who make the transition from mild amusement to genuine curiosity, browsing through Minowa's eighty-fight record yields a far greater appreciation for the man and his moxy.
Make no mistake, Minowa's not a can, and he's not a joke. In fact he's possibly the toughest son of a bitch walking this earth, and his fighting career is an unflinching snapshot of everything grand and gruesome in an era of MMA.
(click "Read More" for the full feature)
The casual fan would have every excuse to discredit Minowa as a fighter. He's Japanese, and the Japanese have had little high-level success in western promotions like the UFC. He's a some-time pro wrestler (Lesnar's success be damned), who fights in plainly generic pro wrestler shorts, and often in pro wrestler boots or shoes. He's the proud owner of a well-trimmed mullet. He's smaller than almost all of his competitors, and his striking is terribly mediocre at best. He's known as much for the intensity of his entrances as his talent in the ring. The description reads like a blueprint for MMA irrelevancy.
A typical Minowa ring entrance
But surprisingly, when the facts are laid bare, Minowa proves to be every bit as relevant to MMA as your favorite superstar fighter. Yes, read it again...I said it. Minowa matters.
Minowa has fought as much top competition as some UFC hall-of-famers and current champions. Seven of his opponents have been K-1, Pride, or UFC beltholders or tournament champions. He is also a rare enigma in fight-sport whereby one man's losses are every bit as impressive as other fighter's victories. Among his losses are respected and legendary names like Wanderlei Silva, Yuki Kondo, Semmy Schilt, "Rampage" Jackson, Kazushi Sakuraba, Mirko "CroCop" Filipovic, Murilo Bustamante, Kiyoshi Tamura, Evan Tanner, and many others.
That's not enough to quell your laughter? Well consider the fact that Minowa has with regularity fought men who outweighed him by as much as 170 lbs...and sometimes more. Such is the life of a Japanese freakshow fighter. Opponents Eric "Butterbean" Esch, Bobb "The Beast" Sapp, Wagner "Zulu" de Conceicao Martins, Paulo "Giant Silva" da Silva and Semmy "Hightower" Schilt outweigh Minowa by an average of 164 lbs, and are an average of ten inches taller. Minowa beat three of them. Oh, and his next opponent? 7'2", 352 lb Hong Man "The Techno Goliath" Choi. In the wake of Minowa's efforts, Couture vs Lesnar suddenly begins to look a lot less like David vs Goliath and more like a friendly catchweight bout. Fighters like Keith Hackney and Marco Ruas made names as giant tamers thanks to single bouts. Minowa has made an entire career out of tangling with and often toppling men who are literally twice his size.
Say what you want about his record or his even his skillset, but Minowa's courage to consistently face men of such imposing physical stature is something that few in the sport could hope to emulate. Even still, his courage and his competition aren't the only things that make him such a unique figure in MMA.
Setting his fearlessness aside, Minowa's numbers continue to do the talking. "The Punk" has twenty-seven career submissions. By contrast, submission legend Minotauro Nogueira has twenty; Fedor, sixteen. Fourteen of Minowa's thirty losses have come by decision in spite of frequent mismatches. He's fought thirteen years, for eleven different promotions, in four different countries. An average of six fights per year, for eighty fights in total...four times as many fights as MMA legend and pioneer Royce Gracie. Twenty times more than UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. Laughter turns to reverent silence in recognition of computations such as these.
Measuring the value of Minowa transcends even the statistical and the numerical. His MMA odyssey is littered with a potpourri of historic and fascinating anecdotes. He fought in the inaugural event for staple Japanese promotion DEEP in 2001, and seven years later joined the inaugural card of fellow Japanese super-show Dream. Minowa made his name internationally for his dozen-plus fights in the legendary Pride Fighting Championships, but to the surprise of many, he actually fought for the rival UFC promotion first. Over three years before setting foot in a Pride ring, Minowa won a TKO victory over Joe Slick at UFC Japan 3 in Tokyo.
Among his eight draws are a contest with MMA ironman and fellow trivia-piece Travis Fulton (also a noted racist), as well as the only MMA bout in the career of respected Brazilian and American Top Team co-founder Ricardo Liborio. The much-ballyhooed 2006 Pride Open-Weight Gran Prix championship run of Mirko "CroCop" Filipovic started with a first round showdown against Minowa. Minowa fought Wanderlei Silva and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in a span of a month and a half, and he once fought nine times in under eight months in 1999. Reflecting MMA's international appeal, he's fought Koreans, Americans, Brazilians, Englishmen, Croatians, Germans, Japanese, Russians, and Dutchmen. He's trained Muay Thai in Thailand and Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil. It could be argued that Minowa is a kind of living embodiment of many of MMA's defining characteristics, particularly the variety of MMA found in Japan.
Perhaps the greatest revelation in Minowa's story lies not in simply overcoming the chuckles to find respect for him as a competitor, but rather in the way that Minowa forces the MMA fan to reconsider what he really values in a fighter. While the legends of the sport have garnered their share of universal respect and acknowledgment, and every frontrunner appreciates a champion or superstar whose coattails they can latch onto, Minowa is equally as beloved in some circles for reasons unto his own. Minowa illustrates the virtue of toughness, courage, and persistence in the face of perpetual and longstanding adversity. Every excuse could be afforded him to turn down such consistently scary opponents, or even to hang up the gloves completely. He'll likely never attain a major championship, and at age 33, his limited skillset will only further deteriorate over time. The money aside, Minowa really doesn't have anything to fight for but glory. And with more freakshow fights and likely more losses on his horizon, the jokes and the "can" moniker likely aren't going away any time soon.
But in his own way, Minowa represents hope for those in life who may never achieve great heights, and yet never cease to continue fighting; those who routinely face long odds and perpetual setbacks, but meet the next set of challenges just as willingly. He has stared down immeasurable odds and beaten them, and mustered the courage to face the best and give his all, time and again. Minowa is champion of no organization, and has achieved no single distinguishment as an MMA competitor, but he is forever in the hearts and minds of those who root for the underdog, and those who appreciate a tireless and unflappable warrior. If MMA history has some sense of justice, it would see fit to award "The Punk" something more than just a footnote or a side column in its annals. For while the champions and the greats provide the heights to which others can aspire, it is the fighting spirit of men like Minowa that help to define the sport, and to reflect the warrior in each of us.

The Thai clinch is a technique derived from the martial art of Muay Thai, a popular stand-up form of fighting that originated in Thailand. TUF Sport- "The Ultimate Fighter" From Conception to Kimbo
Here's the latest edition of our editorial series, QBE's. We're covering "The Ultimate Fighter" and its newest star participant, the one and only Kimbo Slice.
Legitimacy can be a tough thing to establish, and an even tougher thing to maintain. You need look no further than one Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson in order to believe as much. While he may in fact hold the title as the most recognizable figure in all of MMA (perhaps all of combat sports), eclipsing other high-profile names like Liddell and Lesnar, whether or not he's deserving of his status...is an entirely more sordid affair.
Interestingly enough, much like Mr Slice, the sport of MMA has suffered through the ills of a perceived lack of legitimacy, and in fact is still in the business of fully wresting its image away from the lingering specter of bloodsport that characterized its early years. While its path to acceptance grows clearer seemingly every day, no single occurrence, outside of possibly the establishment of a unified MMA rules structure by the New Jersey state Athletic Commission in 2000, did more to set the sport on its road to legitimacy than "The Ultimate Fighter" reality series.
Now, having done its share to solidify MMA's credibility as a legitimate sporting entity, "TUF" finds itself in the precarious position of having to establish (perhaps with irreversible certainty) whether or not Kimbo is a legitimate figure in MMA, and worthy of his pop culture status as a bona fide tough guy. Viewers...millions of them, will be standing by to find out.
(click "Read More" for the full feature)
To be sure, the Ultimate Fighter has been a bit of a mixed blessing for the Mixed-Martial Arts world. While I doubt sincerely that a single fighter, fan, or MMA promoter would prefer to live in a world where TUF never existed, I do think most would acknowledge at least to some degree that its bounty has come with its share of negatives in tow.
While casual fans and those unfamiliar with the sport may have gained a greater appreciation for its techniques and practitioners as a result of the show, the degree to which debauchery and degradation are espoused within the confines of the house does little to diminish the perceptions by MMA outsiders that the sport is the trade of unkempt thugs and hooligans. Drunken tirades, in-house brawls, and "upper deckers" (look it up...or not, preferably) are unbecoming behavior from men claiming to be professional sportsmen, and the show's producers have spent every bit as much time and effort profiting from the dramatic shenanigans as they have attempting to quell them.
Furthermore, and perhaps more grievously in my judgment, TUF has served to muddy the tempo and the legitimacy of the title picture for the fighters in the organization who didn't have to fight their way onto the UFC roster via a reality show. The examples grow with each passing season. Titles were left dormant for ten month stretches in seasons 7 and 8, due to the fact that the champion and challenger were coaching on the show. Season 4 saw the show winners given title shots against UFC champions, with disastrous results. Recently, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's decision to coach the upcoming season of TUF (the Heavyweight showcase featuring Kimbo) against newly dethroned champion Rahsad Evans, rendered that he would forfeit his number one contendership against undefeated belt-holder Lyoto Machida (the man who took the title from Evans). So again, the competitive landscape of the UFC finds itself altered at the hands of TUF.
But to its credit, TUF has also produced some excellent fighters (including champions), and rest assured, Ferguson is aware of this potential. Capitalizing on the enormous causal interest he generates by proving to be a respectable, viable (exceptional?) competitor on the show would garner massive exposure for himself and the sport, and massive ratings for the ever-wealthier UFC brass to further market their brand of MMA. Standouts like Stephen Bonnar and Rashad Evans aside, even less-decorated TUF alumni such as Keith Jardine, Chirs Lytle, and Josh Koscheck have proven worthy assets to help fill UFC pay-per-view cards with exciting and competitive fights. Short of winning the show, Kimbo would do well to establish himself in one of these roles, and would be a major draw to round out future cards.
(Dana White's TUF Proposal to Kimbo)
Kimbo's legitimacy as a fighter will likely never reach the stratospheric proportions of his popular mindshare as the baddest dude to ever set foot in a back yard, but any measure of success as a participant on TUF (and certainly if by some miraculous feat he managed to win the whole thing) will only serve to add credibility to his place as a worthy figure in the MMA community. Lesnar, for all the negativity he sometimes garners, admittedly has earned his stripes of UFC legitimacy, if not exactly the title shot he was awarded. Kimbo saw a setback in his mythos after his embarrassing tumble against Seth Petruzzeli in his last bout, but if he arrives at TUF as an MMA fighter first, and a celebrity second (or not at all), he could go a long way towards restoring his image as someone worth fearing.
But maybe only if he gets to fight Wes Sims in the first round. We'll see..

Cowboy Fedor's Strikeforce and WEC Picks
Tuesday, June 2, 2009
A special 2-for-1 Strikeforce and WEC edition of Cowboy Fedor's picks for this week, featuring a special guest analyst! Who could it be??
Howdy again, comrades! I've been summoned back from the Siberian prairie in order to provide the populace with picks for this weekends upcoming MMA events, the Strikeforce: Lawler vs Shields and the WEC: Brown vs Faber 2. These are major happenings in North America, I'm told. Unfortunately, the Belarusian swine flu has jumped the border, sickening some of my livestock, so I'm going to have to limit myself to one set of picks. Luckily for you, I have a certain Brazilian friend along to help me with selecting the other picks. Enjoy, pardners!
(click "Read More" for the full feature)
First, the Strikeforce main card.
Robbie Lawler vs Jake Shields: Sheilds is a proficient grappler, but his striking leaves much to be desired. Lawler lacks speaking skills, but as a fighter he is sound. He will avoid Sheild's submisisons and TKO him for a victory.
Andrei Arlovski vs Brett Rogers: I'm not fond of Belarus at the moment, but I respect Arlovski as a fighter. Unfortunately, Rogers does not possess the necessary talents to avoid Arlovski's punches in a manner that is only visible in slow motion. Arlovski by KO, round one.
Scott Smith vs Nick Diaz: Around seven years ago, many MMA buckaroos thought that mediocre boxing, a Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, and an iron chin were the ingredients of a champion. Well it wasn't true then, nor is it now. Smith by TKO in the third.
Phil Baroni vs Joe Riggs: The Baroni character makes me chuckle. It's as though he has vodka for blood. His silliness however, is his weakness. Stoicism in battle is more becoming of one's character. Riggs wins a unanimous decision.
Kevin Randleman vs Mike Whitehead: Randleman is tougher than eating horseshoes for breakfast, but he'll need to use what brains are remaining in his cranium to avoid Whitehead's power. I'm not hopeful. Whitehead takes the decision.
Sadly, I've got to head back to the ranch to tend to my herd. But a friend of mine has stopped by to finish out our WEC picks! QB readers, please give a pleasurable welcome to my old comrade, Metal-Hair Wanderlei! Dasvidania, buckeroos!
Hello, my guys! When Cowboy Fyodor asked me to fill in for him on the WEC picks, I promised him to be.."brutally"..honest with my choices. After all, if you can't trust a man with a mullet, who can you trust? My picks for the main card:
Mike Thomas Brown vs Urijah Faber: Both of these guys rock hard, but Faber was too aggressive in their first fight. The solution? Be even more aggressive, of course! Faber TKO's Brown in the third.
Jose Aldo vs Cub Swanson: Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu, and Brazilians are like the Holy Trinity of fighting! The only thing missing is a powerful mullet! Swanson is a tough guy, my guys, but Aldo will blitz him with a second round TKO!
James Krause vs Donald Cerrone: Cerrone is a "cowboy", much like my friend Fyodor. Krause is undefeated, but Cerrone will wail on him like a Stratocaster at an Iron Maiden concert. Cowboy stops Krause for a third round TKO.
Josh Grispi vs Jens Pulver: Pulver is like Metallica...he rocked back in the day, but lately, not so much. Grispi has a good ground game, and a long reach, which Pulver will have trouble with. Jens' tour ends by a third round submission from Grispi.
And that is it, my guys! Thanks for rocking out with me and Fyodor, and remember, stay aggressive! Read more!

Read more!
